As a child, I dreamed of being able to write beautiful works of literature. I would scribble in my journal and fantasize about mysterious characters and far away lands. I dreamed of transporting readers into a world that they couldn’t step away from.
Sadly, writing was not really my strong suit as a child. I struggled with all the things at school. My struggles naturally turned me off from writing. Seemingly closing the door on a career based upon my writing skills. That is until I got to college. As a marketing major, I suddenly realized I was pretty darn good at writing papers. Maybe there were not mysterious characters or far away lands, but there was persuasion and clear articulation of thought. It took longer than I’m willing to admit to come to the conclusion that I could be a writer. A copywriter.
As a copywriter I get one of three reactions when I tell people what I do: 1) a blank stare and the slow head shake 2) “what’s that?” or 3) “oh I see”. I can’t seem to control myself and usually start rambling about what I do and how I help businesses. I’m excited to share about how copywriting can positively impact a business. It still surprises me when I finish rambling and someone says “I could really use someone like you”. It’s my favorite reaction!
So what is a copywriter you ask? Let me save you my ramblings and break it down a bit.
What it actually means to be a copywriter?
A copywriter is someone who writes custom content primarily for marketing or advertising. I consider myself a marketing content specialist. Copywriters specialize in putting your brand into words to educate, inform, and persuade readers.
Copywriters collaborate with business owners and brands to develop any of the following materials:
- Website copy (home pages, about pages, services pages, landing pages, and so much more)
- Blog posts
- Newsletters for businesses
- Email sequences
- eBooks
- White papers
- Product descriptions
- ...and so much more!
Copywriters are leveraged for printed materials. But, copywriting for online content is growing as more consumers look to the web and social media to make buying decisions.
What does a copywriter provide?
Copywriters bring your brand to life through the written word. If you have a big launch or want to provide your customers with regular content, copywriting is important. Copywriters are obsessive about capturing your tone, clearing away clutter, and providing a clear call to action for readers. When you engage with a copywriter you can expect:
- Headlines that grab attention and bring traffic
- Structured content that is ideal for both the skimmer and deep reader
- Up-to-date SEO knowledge
- Content that clearly conveys your message or action
4 Reasons Why You Need A Copywriter
Copywriting Gives a Voice To Your Brand
Imagine if your brand could speak. What would it sound like? What type of words would it use? Copywriters give your brand a strong and consistent voice that tells your story. A story that helps to build lasting relationships with your customers. Establishing a brand voice helps support a consistent message across all platforms including your website, emails, and social media posts. Strong and consistent content can make your ads recognizable, prevent emails from being deleted, and help build your social media presence.
Think about the brands you love. Why do you spend your money on that brand? Why do you recommend them to your friends and family? It’s because, over time, a successful brand has become second nature to you. Without hesitation, you can pick up one of their products and know the value you will receive. These brands relay the same message, in the same voice across all of their content. Every piece of collateral they develop, every word they share articulates who they are and what value they will provide.
Copywriting Builds Connections With Your Ideal Clients
In the vast world of online marketing connecting with your ideal clients can seem like a daunting task. Who are they? What do they like? Where do they live? What motivates them to buy? These are all questions that copywriters help businesses tease out so that high-quality, targeted content can be developed.
There are numerous ways to help connect with your ideal clients. But, your website is like opening the front door to your living room. You invite your client in and let them see what you’re about. Help them to understand your ‘why’ and make them feel safe. Letting them know you can address their concerns. Sharing personal anecdotes helps to emotionally connect with your clients. And, sharing what makes your business unique can separate you from your competition.
The secret...copywriting is behind all of this. Great copy with targeted messaging allows your online presence to connect you directly with your ideal clients. And, it tells them what to do next – how to buy, schedule, or engage directly with you.
Copywriting Generates Organic Traffic and Brings In Business
The goal of any business owner is to draw a client in once and then keep them for a lifetime. While online advertising is important for bringing in new clients, driving organic traffic to your business is preferred. Organic traffic helps directly connect you with legitimate clients and often leads to quick sales. Clients that find you organically typically stick with the brand for the long-term.
Copywriters can help to develop online advertising to support client development. But, a copywriter’s sweet spot is helping businesses develop organic traffic utilizing SEO optimized content. This might be done by creating a website your client can’t stop reading. Or, by creating a social media post that points to a detailed blog with a call to action the reader just can’t resist. Boosting organic traffic to your website, blogs, or landing pages will directly impact your revenue and help to build clients for life.
Copywriting Frees Up Your Time
As a business owner, you want to share your thoughts and feelings with your clients. You likely have great ideas for what your audience might want to hear about. Or, you have goals to enhance sales for specific products. But, finding the time to write high-quality, SEO optimized content every-single-week just isn’t going to happen.
Even if you love writing, getting enough content out the door to keep your clients engaged is time-consuming. For some, writing just isn’t for them. Doing more of what you are good at is key. Outsourcing content creation can help to free up your time to focus on what really matters – your daily business operations.
